Deadline- 2nd July 2012
Yemen is one of the poorest countries in the world and the poorest country in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Yemen is also the most food insecure country in the Arab world and is amongst the top 10 least food secure countries globally. Although the final report is not yet available, there is strong evidence emerging from the preliminary results of the last Comprehensive Food Security Survey (CFSS) conducted by WFP at the end of 2011 that the latest period of social unrest in Yemen resulted in a further deterioration of the above-mentioned figures. Malnutrition rates (both chronic and acute malnutrition) have also increased, sometimes dramatically, although not necessarily in the same Governorates as food insecurity.
The malnutrition has multiple causes closely linked with poverty, health and education, environment and natural resources management, and more directly related to quality and quantity of food intake, lack of knowledge of mothers and recurrent diseases.
