SOUTH BENGAL INSTITUTE FOR COMMUNITY STUDIES
..…Committed to improve lives

MISSION & VISION
HISTORY
The divide between the worlds’ rich and poor is the result of closed hearts and narrow minds. Number of poor has always overshadowed the number of milliners. Poverty which is the root cause of all evils is multidimensional in nature. Therefore there can not be any single solution for it’s reduction. Poverty reduction can only be achieved through a broad spectrum of activities bolstering universal human rights, fostering economic growth and social development, enhancing national and local capacity and empowering the poor to join as central partners in their own development. These actions fit neither simple framework nor single blueprint. With this challenge in the backdrop, in the year 1999, the Institute was established. However to concretize its commitment formal registration process was completed in the year 2006.
INTRODUCTION
South Bengal Institute for Community Studies is a community support organization based in West Bengal. It was registered under West Bengal Registration Act 1961 with it’s headquarter at Bishnupur,Bankura. South Bengal Institute for Community Studies in short SBICS is endeavouring to address to the needs of community in a holistic manner. SBICS emphasizes on becoming key link in between government and community. SBICS believe that the solution lies in empowerment of community.
DO WE REALLY NEED ANOTHER ORGANIZATION WORKING IN THE FIELD OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ?
There is a large number of Government projects and non-governmental and voluntary organizations working for the betterment of lives. But they have failed to present a scientific approach towards community development. Lack of proper health care or widespread poverty in the society is not because of the resources but an acute lack of access to and control over resources. In almost all setups community has failed to have it’s control over the resources. SBICS’s focus is to develop self sustaining institution of the marginalized for the sake of their own development.
OUR VISION
Our vision is of a world where communities that has been forced to live a life without dignity, in poverty, in conflicts and all other forms of injustice due to inequitable distribution of resources can be empowered to shape the course of their own future and can bring in a qualitative change.
OUR MISSION
Progress without social justice is not real human progress. Therefore our focus is immediate needs of human being like food, health care, shelter and education. We pay special attention to delivery of basic health care to the vulnerable section of the society, Safe transfusion of blood by hundred percent voluntary blood donations to government blood banks, thallessemia and AIDS prevention. We also give attention to rural reconstruction rather than rural development. Because we believe that the root cause of poverty is not because of the resources but inaccessibility to those resources.

INTERVENTION AREAS
In South Bengal the Institute has undertaken a multi-faceted approach through its social initiatives. Though our initiative started with voluntary blood donation movement in this South Bengal but very slowly we are making headway in to the area of comprehensive community development. Our mobile health care facility to certain Blocks in Bishnupur Sub-division has been extremely successful. These approaches have been primarily successful with the help of a pool of doctors offering honorary service to our Institute. We have working with more than 200 civil society organisations and over thousands of poor. Our focus is on the rights of India’s most marginalised communities: Dalit and indigenous people, rural and urban poor, women, children and minorities. These groups face an acute lack of access to and control over resources, services, and institutions. We pay special attention to those in vulnerable situations such as people living with chronic hunger, HIV/AIDS or disability, migrant and bonded workers, children who are out of school, and people whose land or livelihood is under threat. South Bengal Institute for Community Studies believes that to make any dent in persistent inequity and injustice, the root causes of poverty must be addressed, and not just the distress conditions. We therefore take a rights-based approach to development, helping people to claim their rights which may be constitutional, moral or legal entitlements.
ORGANISATION
SBICS has planned a three-tier structure for the organization. The first tier would comprise of advisor and patrons who will help the organization to formulate plans from time to time. The second tier would comprise of the Executive members who will help the organization in expansion of activities and exploration of institutional funding from donor and funding agencies. The Executive Committee would be the core team. This core team will be in charge of the planning and monitoring process. The third tier will comprise of the ordinary members and a group of field workers who will look after the implementation part of different projects.
FUNDING
SBICS plans to approach donor and funding agencies for individual as well as institutional funding. Till date SBICS has been receiving funds basically from individuals. Therefore the major contribution has been of voluntarism. SBICS wants to make it categorically clear that none of it’s member from the first or second tier would receive any salary. All the funding received would cover the administrative cost and the salary of the field personnel. These funds will help the ongoing projects and the upcoming ones. SBICS is not having any funding commitment right now.
