Jananeethi – Making a difference
Who we are
JANANEETHI is a registered charity established in 1992 in Kerala, the southern state of India. It aims to enforce human rights – freedom from fear and want, freedom to live with dignity – using law as a therapeutic agent, providing protection and redress, in particular regions and on issues of strategic focus; to strengthen human rights jurisprudence and access to justice. It defends and supports victims of torture and organized violence, gender discrimination and ethnic bias, corruption and communal hate by tailoring activities and programs in response to needs of respective groups/situations.
Non-political, non-sectarian, no-profit making and secular organization, the service section of Jananeethi works in close collaboration with its legal fraternity to provide psycho-legal therapeutic services to victims of organized violence and torture and to document all human rights violations, particularly those inflicted on the most vulnerable and marginalized sections of society including women and children. Torture is widely interpreted as cruel and inhuman treatment, physical or mental, by law enforcement bodies/agencies. Jananeethi, for obvious reasons, considers the following acts also as “torture” on women – rape and sexual abuse, genital mutilation, incest, forced abortion, honour killings, dowry-related violence, forced marriages, human trafficking and forced prostitution. “Organised violence” means infliction of significant avoidable pain and suffering by an organized group according to a declared or implied strategy and/or system of ideas and attitudes. It comprises any violent action which is unacceptable by general human standards, and relates to the victims’ mental/physical wellbeing.
