Established in 1999, The Forest Trust (TFT – formerly Tropical Forest Trust) is a UK registered charity with over 90 staff working in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and South America.
Its core mission is to conserve forests and it believes that the best way to do that is through sustainable business practices and trade in Forest Sustainable Products.
Since our inception we’ve developed and refined a unique expertise in managing product supply chain risk and delivering sustainable forest management in high risk and complex conditions. By working in partnership with both producers and consumers of wood, TFT focuses on making trade in timber from sustainably managed forests standard practice. In partnership with forest companies, local communities and other stakeholders, TFT provides expert advice and guidance to improve forest management practices towards the achievement of FSC certification. Through promoting the international trade of sustainably produced timber, TFT seeks to give forests value as fully functioning ecosystems rather than as land cleared for alternative uses.
This work is now more important than ever with the recognition that halting deforestation is the most economic and timely vehicle for reducing the Green House Gas emissions that fuel climate change. Our story thus far demonstrates that trade based on sustainable forest operations can profit retailers, suppliers, forest owners and forest dependent communities.
TFT is currently working in over 4 million ha of tropical forests and aiming to work with 100 million ha of forest in 5 year around the world helping them move towards sustainable forest management.
