Executive Summary
This proposal outlines the establishment of Child-Friendly Spaces (CFS) in emergency contexts to support children affected by conflict, disasters, and displacement. During humanitarian crises, children face increased risks of trauma, violence, neglect, and interruption to their education and social development. The project aims to create safe, structured, and supportive environments where children can access psychosocial support, recreational activities, and protection services.
The program will establish 10 Child-Friendly Spaces serving approximately 3,000 children aged 3–17 years over a 12-month period. These spaces will provide supervised play, informal learning, psychosocial support, life-skills sessions, and referral pathways for children needing specialized care. The initiative will also engage parents and caregivers to strengthen child protection and well-being within the community. The total funding requested for this project is USD 500,000, which will cover facility setup, trained facilitators, child protection services, program materials, and monitoring activities.
Problem Statement
Children are among the most vulnerable populations during emergencies. Displacement, violence, and loss of community structures often expose them to serious protection risks including psychological trauma, exploitation, child labor, early marriage, and family separation. In addition, disruptions to schooling and social support networks significantly affect children’s mental health, emotional development, and sense of stability.
Without structured activities and protective environments, children in crisis settings often experience stress, anxiety, fear, and behavioral challenges. Parents and caregivers may also struggle to provide adequate support due to economic hardship and the pressures of displacement. Establishing Child-Friendly Spaces provides children with a secure environment where they can play, learn, and begin to recover from traumatic experiences while strengthening community-based child protection systems.
Project Goal and Objectives
Goal:
To enhance the protection, psychosocial well-being, and development of children affected by humanitarian emergencies through safe and supportive Child-Friendly Spaces.
Objectives:
- Establish and operate 10 Child-Friendly Spaces in emergency-affected communities.
- Provide psychosocial support and structured recreational activities to 3,000 children.
- Strengthen child protection mechanisms and referral systems.
- Promote community awareness of child rights and child protection.
- Support parents and caregivers with guidance on child well-being during crises.
Target Population
The project will primarily target:
- Displaced children living in camps or temporary settlements
- Children affected by conflict or natural disasters
- Orphaned, separated, or unaccompanied children
- Children with disabilities
- Children experiencing trauma or emotional distress
The program will directly benefit 3,000 children, while parents, caregivers, and community members will also benefit from awareness and engagement activities.
Project Components and Activities
- Establishment of Child-Friendly Spaces
- The project will establish 10 safe and accessible spaces equipped with play materials, educational supplies, and child-appropriate facilities. These centers will operate daily and provide structured activities supervised by trained facilitators.
- Psychosocial Support Activities
- Facilitators and child protection specialists will conduct activities designed to support emotional healing, including storytelling, art therapy, group games, music, and creative expression sessions.
- Informal Education and Life Skills
- Children will participate in learning activities such as literacy support, numeracy games, and life-skills training. These activities will help maintain cognitive development and prepare children for eventual reintegration into formal education systems.
- Child Protection and Referral Services
- Parental Engagement and Caregiver Support
- Parents and caregivers will participate in awareness sessions on positive parenting, stress management, and child protection practices. Strengthening family support systems is critical to children’s long-term well-being.
- Community Awareness Campaigns
- The project will organize community outreach sessions on child rights, prevention of child exploitation, and the importance of safe environments for children in emergency settings.
Implementation Timeline
- Months 1–2: Needs assessment, site selection, recruitment of facilitators, and setup of Child-Friendly Spaces.
- Months 3–10: Delivery of psychosocial support activities, recreational sessions, learning activities, and community engagement programs.
- Months 11–12: Monitoring review, evaluation, documentation of lessons learned, and sustainability planning.
Expected Outcomes
- 3,000 children gain access to safe spaces for learning and recreation.
- Improved psychosocial well-being and emotional recovery among participating children.
- Reduced protection risks for children living in crisis environments.
- Strengthened community awareness of child protection and child rights.
- Enhanced support systems for caregivers and families.
Monitoring and Evaluation
The project will use a monitoring framework to track participation rates, psychosocial well-being indicators, and child protection outcomes. Data collection methods will include attendance records, facilitator reports, child feedback activities, and community surveys. Periodic evaluations will assess program effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.
Budget (Narrative Form)

Approximately USD XXXXXX will be allocated for personnel, including child protection officers, facilitators, and psychosocial support specialists. The setup and maintenance of Child-Friendly Spaces, including tents or structures, furniture, and educational materials, will require approximately USD XXXXXX. Program supplies such as toys, learning kits, art materials, and sports equipment are budgeted at USD XXXXX. Training and capacity-building activities for facilitators and community volunteers will require USD XXXXX. Monitoring, evaluation, and reporting activities are estimated at USD XXXXX, while operational costs including logistics, transportation, and communication will require USD XXXXX.
