Executive Summary
Adolescence is a transformative phase marked by rapid physical, emotional, and social changes. During this stage, young individuals often face challenges related to academic pressure, peer influence, mental health, and identity formation. In countries like India, the education system largely focuses on academic achievement, with limited emphasis on life skills such as communication, emotional intelligence, and decision-making.
This project aims to strengthen life skills education among adolescents aged 12–18 years through structured school- and community-based interventions. The initiative will focus on building essential skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, emotional regulation, and interpersonal communication. Over a period of 18–24 months, the project will reach approximately 8,000 adolescents, particularly those from underserved communities.
By equipping adolescents with life skills, the project seeks to improve mental well-being, reduce risky behaviors, enhance academic performance, and prepare youth for future opportunities.
Background and Rationale
Life skills are defined by the World Health Organization as abilities that enable individuals to effectively deal with the demands and challenges of everyday life. These include self-awareness, empathy, communication, decision-making, and coping strategies.
Despite global recognition of their importance, life skills are not systematically integrated into many school curricula. Adolescents often lack guidance in managing stress, making informed decisions, and building healthy relationships. This gap is more pronounced in rural and marginalized communities, where access to supportive resources is limited.
The increasing influence of digital media, changing social structures, and exposure to new risks such as cyberbullying and substance use further highlight the need for life skills education. Studies have shown that adolescents who receive life skills training demonstrate improved confidence, better academic performance, and reduced engagement in risky behaviors.
Therefore, there is a pressing need for structured interventions that promote holistic development and empower adolescents with practical skills for everyday life.
Problem Statement
Adolescents face several challenges due to the lack of life skills education:
- Inadequate emotional regulation leading to stress, anxiety, and mental health issues
- Poor communication and interpersonal skills affecting relationships
- Limited decision-making and problem-solving abilities
- Increased vulnerability to peer pressure and risky behaviors
- Lack of awareness regarding health, hygiene, and personal safety
These challenges not only impact individual growth but also have long-term consequences for society, including reduced productivity and increased health risks.
