Background & Problem Statement
Plastic waste has become a critical environmental challenge, particularly in urban and peri-urban areas where waste management systems are inadequate. A large proportion of plastic waste remains uncollected or improperly disposed of, leading to pollution of land and water bodies, health risks, and loss of valuable resources.
The current linear model of “use and dispose” must transition to a circular economy approach, where plastic waste is reduced, reused, and recycled. However, gaps exist in segregation, recycling infrastructure, and community awareness, especially among low-income populations and informal waste workers.
Project Goal
To reduce plastic waste pollution by promoting circular economy models through community engagement, waste segregation, and recycling systems.
Objectives
- Improve plastic waste segregation and collection at the source
- Strengthen local recycling systems and value chains
- Promote behavior change toward reduced plastic consumption
- Support livelihoods of waste workers through formal integration
Target Beneficiaries
- Urban households and communities
- Informal waste pickers and recyclers
- Local entrepreneurs and small businesses
- Municipal stakeholders
Key Activities
- Community Awareness & Behavior Change
- Conduct campaigns on plastic reduction and segregation
- Promote alternatives to single-use plastics
- Engage schools and youth in environmental education
- Waste Segregation & Collection Systems
- Distribute segregation bins to households and institutions
- Establish community collection points
- Partner with local authorities for regular waste collection
- Recycling & Circular Economy Initiatives
- Set up or support Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs)
- Facilitate partnerships with recycling companies
- Promote upcycling and reuse enterprises
- Livelihood Support for Waste Workers
- Provide training, safety equipment, and fair wage linkages
- Formalize and integrate waste pickers into the system
- Support micro-enterprises in recycling and upcycling
Expected Outcomes
- Increased rate of plastic waste segregation at source
- Reduction in plastic waste leakage into the environment
- Strengthened local recycling ecosystems
- Improved income and working conditions for waste workers
- Increased community awareness and behavior change
Monitoring & Evaluation
- Baseline and endline waste audits
- Tracking volume of plastic collected and recycled
- Household participation rates in segregation
- Income improvements among waste workers
Sustainability Plan
- Community ownership of waste management systems
- Revenue generation through recycling and upcycling
- Long-term partnerships with municipalities and private sector
- Continuous awareness and education initiatives
