Executive Summary
Rapid urbanization is transforming cities across developing and emerging economies. While urban growth creates economic opportunities, it also generates social fragmentation, inequality, housing shortages, competition for resources, and tensions between migrant and host communities.
This project aims to strengthen social cohesion in rapidly urbanizing zones by promoting inclusive governance, community dialogue, youth engagement, conflict prevention mechanisms, and equitable access to services. Over three years, the initiative will reach 100,000 residents in high-growth urban districts and improve trust, inclusion, and peaceful coexistence indicators.
The project aligns with urban resilience and peacebuilding priorities supported by the United Nations Development Programme, UN-Habitat, and World Bank.
Background and Rationale
Rapid urbanization often results in:
- Expansion of informal settlements
- Increased unemployment and underemployment
- Strained public services
- Rising inequality
- Competition over land and housing
- Social tensions between long-term residents and newcomers
Urban zones experiencing rapid migration may face:
- Youth marginalization
- Inter-ethnic or inter-religious tensions
- Gender-based violence
- Political polarization
- Weak trust in local governance
Without proactive interventions, these dynamics can escalate into social unrest and conflict.
