Introduction
Lagos stands at the forefront of Africa’s creative revolution. As the cultural and commercial heartbeat of Nigeria, the city has produced globally influential music, film, fashion, and visual arts movements. From the global rise of Afrobeats to the international expansion of Nollywood, Lagos has become a dynamic hub of innovation, storytelling, and artistic excellence.
Despite this rapid growth, many young artists struggle to transform their talent into sustainable livelihoods. Limited access to business knowledge, intellectual property protection, funding opportunities, and structured mentorship often leaves creatives operating in the informal economy with unstable income streams. While artistic potential is abundant, entrepreneurial capacity and market integration remain significant gaps.
At the same time, Nigeria’s youthful population presents a powerful opportunity. With the right support systems, training, and networks, emerging artists can become job creators, cultural ambassadors, and drivers of inclusive economic growth. Strengthening cultural entrepreneurship not only enhances individual livelihoods but also contributes to national economic diversification and global cultural influence.
The Cultural Entrepreneurship Training for Young Artists initiative seeks to bridge this gap by equipping emerging creatives in Lagos with business skills, digital tools, financial literacy, and industry connections. By transforming creativity into viable enterprises, the program will empower young artists to build sustainable careers while strengthening Lagos’ position as a leading global creative capital.
Background and Rationale
Lagos is one of Africa’s fastest-growing cultural capitals, home to vibrant creative industries including music, film, fashion, visual arts, and digital media. The rise of Afrobeats and the global influence of Nollywood have positioned Nigeria as a cultural powerhouse.
Despite this growth, many young artists lack access to business training, intellectual property (IP) knowledge, funding opportunities, and structured market access. The UNESCO emphasizes that strengthening cultural and creative industries (CCIs) is key to youth employment, economic diversification, and sustainable urban development.
This project aims to equip emerging artists in Lagos with entrepreneurial, financial, and digital skills to build sustainable creative enterprises.
