Service for Peace (SFP) is a significant agency of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) engaged in promoting the 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service (MLK-DOS) and the 40 Days of Peace starting on January 21, 2013.
The MLK Day of Service accredits the life of Dr. King by reminding all Americans of their civic duty to serve, as well as helping members of the community to work together to solve common problems. The service which occurs on the MLK Day weekend is a START to engage volunteers and partners beyond the holiday and impact their community year-round.
The 40 Days of Peace which starts on MLK Day is a commitment to peace through service and kindness which anyone can implement. During this period people identify, commit to, and engage in positive acts of kindness and service that make a positive difference one act at a time. National and local partners, individuals, families, communities, schools, communities of faith, community organizations, law enforcement and many others will accumulate acts of peace and kindness towards building peaceful and harmonious communities.
SFP’s comprehensive MLK plan for 2013 aims to achieve the following goals:
- Implementation of MLK projects and the 40 Days of Peace in at least 10 states engaging larger numbers of volunteers and partners than past years
- Recruitment of veterans, military families & students to service
- Improvement of the lives of disadvantaged youth & military families
- Strengthening of communities engaged in service through “Communities of Peace
- Growing the impact of the MLK Day connected to Dr. King’s teachings
The anticipated outcomes are to promote a “Community of Peace” with an increase in yearlong civic engagement whereby corporations, public agencies, individuals, community foundations and faith-based institutions bolster, reinforce, and sustain essential life affirming service endeavors.
