The Ella Baker Social Justice Award is awarded to a student organization that has distinguished itself by working towards social justice for underserved, underrepresented and/or disadvantaged populations. The group’s work should focus on improving the well being of these populations and should promote equality and understanding in the general public. The award is named after Ella Baker, a native of Virginia, who was an educator, activist, and leader. She was one of this nation’s greatest community organizers who worked tirelessly to better the living conditions and opportunities for those less fortunate. She collaborated with notable organizations including the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP), Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Baker is known for her work in advising SNCC and believing in the potential of student activists.
Eligibility –
Any university/college student organization, graduate or undergraduate, in the state of Virginia. Previous award recipients are not eligible.
