The Online News Association is composed largely of professional digital journalists. Founded in 1999, ONA now has more than 1,800 professional members whose principal livelihood involves gathering or producing news for digital presentation. The membership includes news writers, producers, designers, editors, photographers, technologists and others who produce news for the Internet or other digital delivery systems, as well as academic members and others interested in the development of online journalism. ONA also sponsors an annual conference focusing on the latest in journalism and technology and administers the prestigious Online Journalism Awards.
ONA is a leader in the rapidly changing world of journalism; a catalyst for innovation in story-telling across all platforms; a resource for journalists seeking guidance and growth, and a champion of best practices through training, awards and community outreach.
Eligibility–
- The Online Journalism Awards are open to websites, areas of websites and all digital platforms, including smart phones, e-readers and tablets, where journalists have originated the content or selected and amplified it. Search services, portal sites and wire services may submit content they created that fits the eligibility requirements. Individuals and organizations may enter the contest. Self-nominations are welcome. Online retailers and advertising sites are not eligible.
- To be considered for a student award, the entire project must have been produced only by enrolled and uncompensated students receiving academic credit for the work being entered. (Scholarships are not considered compensation.) Students can be full- or part-time; graduate, undergraduate or high school students. Work produced for pay, either for a professional media organization or through a grant of another client, should be entered in the appropriate professional category.
- Submitting to a student category and checking the box to agree to the terms of the awards affirms that the work was done by students. The entrant may be contacted to explain any professional or professorial involvement.
