Call for nominations are invited for 2012 Women in Science Awards. The Department of Science and Technology is calling for nominations to accredit women scientists and researchers. The theme for the 2012 Women in Science Awards is “Using Science and Technology to Develop Rural Women and End Poverty”.
This theme is in line with 2012 United Nations Theme for women namely Empower rural women and end hunger and poverty and also takes cognizance of Parliament’s theme for 2012 namely Knowledge Economy and Development Opportunities.
The awards are aimed at profiling women scientists and researchers as role models for younger scientists and researchers; and encouraging and rewarding younger women who are starting their careers as emerging researchers and scientists.
The 2012 Women in Science Awards will be presented on 24 August 2012, as part of the Department’s celebration of National Women’s Month.
The categories for the 2012 Women in Science Awards are as follows:
1. Awards for Distinguished Women Researchers
• Physical and Engineering Sciences
• Social Sciences and Humanities
• Indigenous Knowledge Systems
2. Awards for Distinguished Young Women Researchers
• Physical and Engineering Sciences
• Social Sciences and Humanities
3. Research Awards for the Development of Rural Women
Three awards will be made to women doing research and innovation that has contributed to the development of rural women.
• Distinguished researcher
• Emerging researcher
• Postdoctoral Fellowship
4. Fellowships
• Master’s students (X3)
• Doctoral students (x3)
5. TATA Africa Scholarships for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology
• Master’s students (X3)
• Doctoral students (X3)
Winners may be requested to participate in public awareness initiatives led by the DST.NOMINATION PROCEDURE.
Nominations on the attached form should reach the Department of Science and Technology by 20 July, 2012.
