The representatives of seven European media foundations joined their hands together in De Balie Debating Centre in Amsterdam to exchange ideas. These representatives agreed that encouraging premium-quality journalism, in print or online, will enhance journalism’s role as a vital defender of democracy’s freedom and as an initiator of a serious European discourse. Therefore, idea for the European Press Prize came into existence.
The European Awards for Journalism will be given in four categories. Each award will be of 10,000 Euros to be spent wherever possible on a personal project which in turn enrich the practice of journalism. The winners’ work will be published on the website of the European Press Prize.
This Award will be given in four categories including:
- The Editing Award for the editor in chief or editor responsible for a publication which the judges believe has contributed most to public debate and public understanding.
- The Commentator Award for the feature writer, columnist or commentator has done most to illuminate vital issues for his readers.
- The News Reporting Award for the reporter or special commentator whose work has made a decisive impact.
- The Innovation Award – For the outstanding innovation of the year – in print or via digital: anything that makes a significant contribution to journalism’s future.
The winners will be judged by a distinguished panel from different areas of Europe and under the chairmanship of Sir Harold Evans, editor-at-large of Thomson Reuters and former editor of London’s Sunday Times. The winners will be announced in January and have their awards presented at a congress of Europe’s media foundations in the De Balie Debating Centre, Amsterdam on 26 February, 2013.
