The Bastiat Prize for Journalism was established by International Policy Network (IPN) in 2002 to encourage, recognize and reward writers around the world whose published works elucidate the institutions of the free society. In the enduring spirit of the Prize’s namesake Frédéric Bastiat, the Prize is given to writers who employ eloquent and witty explanations of complex ideas, combined with a clear understanding of markets and their underlying institutions – including property rights, the rule of law, freedom of contract, free speech and limited government.
IPN is now accepting submissions for its Tenth Bastiat Prize for Journalism. The Prize is open to writers anywhere in the world whose published articles eloquently and wittily explain, promote and defend the principles and institutions of the free society.
Eligibility
The Bastiat Prize is open to all writers, anywhere in the world; writers need not be full time journalists or associated with any specific publication.
Entrants may not enter the Bastiat Prize and Hoiles Prize competitions in the same year. Thus, entrants to the 2011 Bastiat Prize for Journalism (“BPJ”) may not enter the 2011 Hoiles Prize for Regional Journalism
Consideration will be given to the articles on the following criteria: intellectual coherence; persuasiveness; wit and creativity; relevance; clarity and simplicity; wider impact.
Authors must nominate themselves, although submissions may be made by an assistant on the author’s behalf with his/her consent
Staff and former staff, Directors and Trustees of International Policy Network, Judges of the Bastiat Prize, Judges of the Hoiles Prize, and their respective immediate family are not eligible for the BPJ.
Winners of cash awards from previous Bastiat Prize competitions are not eligible for the prize in the three years following their win.
IPN reserves the right to clarify and/or modify these rules as needed. Entrants will be notified of any changes to the rules.

The total prize fund is $70,000, divided between first ($50,000), second ($15,000) and third ($5,000) prize winners.
