Nominations are now open for the Sophie Prize. This international award worth US $ 100,000 is awarded annually in recognition of environment and sustainable development. The Sophie Prize Ceremony will take place in June 2012 in Oslo.
The Sophie Prize has been established to inspire people working towards a sustainable future. The Prize was established in 1997 by the Norwegian author Jostein Gaarder and his wife Siri Dannevig.
Who can nominate?
Voluntary organizations, independent research institutions and individuals worldwide, with knowledge or interest in environment and/or sustainable development or other closely related topics, can nominate candidates for the Sophie Prize.
Everybody can nominate – but candidates nominated by themselves or their own organization will not be considered for the award.
Who can be nominated?
The Sophie Prize is awarded to an individual or an organization that in a pioneering or a particularly creative way, has pointed to alternatives to the present development and/or put such alternatives into practice.
- What kind of change of consciousness is needed?
- What is sustainable development?
- What important alternative measures must be implemented now?
- What kind of mobilization of people is needed in the “global village”?
Selection Criteria
The recipient of The Sophie Prize will have sought a challenging answer to one or several of the questions above and thus contributed to setting them on the international agenda. Concerning fair distribution of resources and global environment and development issues, the jury will distinguish between what is (seen to be) possible to achieve in the short run and what is truly necessary in the long run. The Sophie Prize will honor efforts to promote changes in the world that are necessary in a long-term perspective.
The Sophie Prize is awarded to one or several persons, or an organization, which has created awareness of alternatives to modern-day development and/or initiated such alternatives in a pioneering or particularly inventive manner. The Board acts as jury for the Sophie Prize. The Board members are professionals that represent relevant experience within the field of environment and sustainable development.
