The Ockenden International is currently inviting internationally operating organizations registered as charities to submit their own project or a project by a registered partner or affiliate organization for its fourth Ockenden International Prize 2016. The prize is for projects and programs that must be helping refugees and/or internally displaced people and excel in developing independence for them.
The finalists will be announced in November 2014.
Prizes
- Grand Winner – $100,000
- Runner-ups (2) – $25,000 each
Prize Objectives
The primary objective of the prizes include highlighting the challenges faced by displaced people, raising awareness of their range of needs, and providing reward and recognition for those giving outstanding support.
Focus Areas
Particular attention is given to the
- Initiatives that promote self-reliance among refugees and/or displaced people.
- Approaches that have proved to be highly effective in improving the lives of refugees and/or displaced people.
- Work that has been carried out in especially difficult circumstances.
- Organizations with strong governance and financial management.
- The applicants must be able to show that there have been measurable achievements and outcomes leading to real change in the lives of those helped.
Past Winners
- The 2015 Ockenden International Prize was awarded to The Community Association for the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights (ACPDH) and Disability and Development Partners (DDP) UK for the DDP-nominated project: “Twunganire Abahungutse (TA) – Everyone Supports Returnees” operating in two provinces of Burundi.
- The two 2015 runners-up were ZOA – Relief Hope Recovery, a Netherlands-based refugee charity for its project “Revitalising Livelihood Opportunities along Two Economic Arteries in Sri Lanka’s Former War Zone” and The Border Consortium (Thailand and Myanmar), for its “Preparedness for Return” programme, preparing refugees with the skills necessary for self-reliance on their return to Myanmar from nine camps on the Thai side of their border.
Eligibility Criteria
- Submissions can be made by internationally operating organizations registered on charities.
- Nominations can be made for organization’s own project or to a project by a registered partner or affiliate organization.
- There are no geographical limits on the locations of submitted projects but the project must have been initiated after May 2012 and should demonstrate properly measured and evaluated outcomes.
Application Process
The organizers consider postal entries from the registered charities without access to the Internet.
The finalists will come to the UK to make final presentations to a specialist panel of five judges on either Tuesday 23 February or Tuesday 1 March 2016 at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University, where the 2016 presentation and prize-giving ceremony will immediately take place.
