The Heineken Prizes are international prizes awarded every other year to five internationally renowned scientists and one highly talented Dutch visual artist for their great merits to science, Dutch art and society.
The scientific Heineken Prizes recognise and reward unique achievement in the fields of biochemistry and biophysics, medicine, environmental sciences, history and cognitive science. The sixth Heineken Prize, the Heineken Prize for Art, is awarded every two years to an artist living and working in the Netherlands.
The biennial Heineken Prizes, worth USD 150,000 each, are offered by the Dr H.P. Heineken Foundation and the Alfred Heineken Fondsen Foundation. The selection of the Prizes is entrusted to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Previous prize winners include Nobel laureates such as Sir Paul M. Nurse, Thomas R. Cech, Jack W. Szostak, Eric R. Kandel and Elizabeth H. Blackburn.
Institutes as well as individual researchers are invited now to nominate suitable candidates for the 2012 Heineken Prizes. The awards ceremony for the Heineken Prizes will take place on 27 September 2012.
Nomination and award
Research institutions and researchers – including the members and corresponding members of the Academy and its sister academies – may nominate candidates who have made an outstanding in their fields. The nationality of the candidate plays no role. Candidates must be individuals who are expected to remain active as researchers for at least another ten years.
Selection Process:
The selection system of the Heineken Prizes can be compared to that of the Nobel Prizes. Scientists from all over the world are invited to nominate fellow scientists for the Heineken Prizes. Independent committees consisting of eminent scientists and chaired by a member of the board of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences select the winners. An independent jury of art historians acting in their personal capacity, chooses the winners of the Dr. A.H. Heineken Prize for Art.
The deadline for nominations is November 1, 2011.
