This UNV Contest on “Volunteering matters for Sustainable Development” aims to collect and share good practices which demonstrate the impact of volunteers, community voluntary action and civic engagement in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and sustainable development.
A selection committee composed of representatives from UNV Field Units and UNV Headquarters staff will review the final selection. Selected winners will be invited either to the Rio+20 Conference to showcase and present their good practices during a potential side event on “volunteerism for sustainable development” or to UNV HQ in Bonn or to another relevant international conference where UNV is involved.
The United Nations and other global leaders have repeatedly highlighted the need for the engagement of volunteers and communities to achieve the MDGs and sustainable peace and development. Global commitment to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) was followed in 2001 by the International Year of Volunteers (IYV) with UNV becoming its focal point. Throughout 2011, which commemorated the tenth anniversary of IYV (IYV+10 supported and led global, regional and national consultative multi-stakeholder processes involving a wide range of volunteer involving organizations (VIOs), civil society, UN organizations, governments, academia and members of the private sector.
The IYY+10 outcomes and declarations encourage knowledge creation and knowledge sharing of good practices of volunteering for sustainable human development and peace that can be adapted, replicated and scaled up. In response to the recommendations of the UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/66/67 adopted at the end of IYV+10, and preparations for the Rio+20 Conference as well as the “Beyond 2015” agenda, UNV has launched a contest to identify evidence-based linkages between volunteerism and sustainable development.
The contest is open to all UN Volunteers, UN Online Volunteers and former UN Volunteers who have taken part in the elaboration, implementation and/or monitoring of a successful project/initiative related to one of the three categories.
Deadline: 4 April 2012
