About The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation:
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was founded in 2000 by the Gates Family. Starting with funding Internet access to public libraries, the Foundation has grown to focus on global health, global development, and work in the United States.
The Gates Foundation website has a lot of information to help organizations submit requests for funding including summaries of current and past grant projects in writing and on video, a searchable database of projects, and detailed instructions on how to apply for funding.
The focus on eradicating HIV is part of the Gates Foundation’s Global Health Division.

Its mission:
The mission of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in regards to HIV is to significantly reduce the incidence of HIV infection and extend the lives of people living with HIV.
Its objectives:
- The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation concentrates resources in areas throughout the world where funding is scarce.
- It funds projects that will potentially have a significant impact on eradicating the world of HIV.
- The Foundation focuses on 6 different areas in regards to HIV:
1.) Vaccine Research and Development:
- Vaccine research and development is the area that the Foundation makes its’ largest investment.
- Funding supports the cycle of vaccine creation – from discovery to clinical trials to product development and manufacturing.
2.) Anti-Retroviral Prevention Methods:
- Efforts to develop, assess, and introduce innovative approaches to preventing populations who are at risk of HIV infection are funded.
- Efforts to evaluate best practices in HIV treatment as prevention are also supported.
3.) Efficient and Effective Service Delivery: five areas to increase access to HIV services are funded in this category including:
- Reducing costs of anti-retroviral treatments.
- Evaluating combinations of preventive interventions.
- Working with major HIV financing partners in order to create effective and cost-effective programs.
- Implementing model studies helping countries allocate HIV resources more effectively.
- Assessing HIV program management strategies.
4.) Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision to limit the spread of HIV.
5.) Improved Diagnostic Methods:
- Supporting the development of rapid, accurate, low-cost diagnostic tools to be used in low resource settings.
- Supporting programs that improve the measurement of HIV activity.
6.) Demonstrating the Scalability of HIV Programs:
- Supporting national efforts in various countries (i.e., India, China, Myanmar, and Botswana) to deliver HIV services to high-risk populations.

- Hutchinson Center Research Institute of South Africa to support research and training efforts.
- Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation to develop best practices in HIV treatment and prevention service delivery.
- Family Health International supporting the demonstration of routine efficiency measurement system in Zambia.
- The Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation to support a youth center.
Recent/relevant news and updates about the foundation:
The Foundation is implementing a new process for requests for funding. All grant programs will be using this new process by January 2014.
How to apply for grants:
- Read grant application requirements that are posted on the Gates Foundation website very carefully.
- The following documents are usually requested by the Foundation for funding requests:
- A proposal narrative
- A budget with a budget narrative
- A results framework and tracker
- A concept memo that outlines a grant proposal that is in the very early stages of development can also be submitted. The concept memo replaces the Letter of Inquiry.
Additional Gates Grant Information:
The Gates Foundation does not fund the following:
- Building or capital campaigns.
- Direct donations or grants to individuals.
- Political campaigns and legislative lobbying efforts.
- Projects addressing health problems in developed countries.
- Projects that exclusively serve religious purposes.
