The Annual World Bank Conference on Land and Poverty is the forum where representatives of governments, civil society, academia, the private sector and the development community meet to discuss various issues that usually concern the land practitioners and policymakers worldwide. The conference acts as a platform to promote discussion and sharing of good practices by showcasing the multiplicity of approaches that are being implemented in the land sector around the world.
The organizers of the Conference are currently inviting papers under the general theme of “Land governance in a rapidly changing environment”. Papers should focus on one of three main thematic areas:
- Innovative approaches to land governance & management: Evidence on implementation & impact
- Creating & maintaining technical, analytical, and administrative capacity for land governance
- Large scale land-related investment: Lessons from experience in agriculture & other sectors
The 2012 conference will focus on innovative ways of dealing with key aspects of land governance in the context of structural change and economic transformation in a pro-poor and gender-sensitive way. These include agricultural investment and productivity growth, climate change and carbon finance, decentralized resource management, land use planning, urban expansion, and dealing with the consequences of or preventing conflict and disaster. To ensure broad stakeholder representation, the organizers invite empirically oriented papers of between 6,000 and 12,000 words for presentation at the conference and possible subsequent publication in a proceedings volume.
Individuals interested in presenting a paper at the conference are required to submit an initial abstract of their presentation. Abstracts should be between 800 and 1,500 words. Abstracts will be reviewed by a technical committee comprised of key partners supporting the conference and ranked according to the following criteria:
- Innovative nature and contribution to the literature;
- Quality of methodology and analytical rigor;
- Policy relevance;
- Relevance for and link to capacity building and knowledge transfer.
Upon request, conference organizers will be able to provide a letter of attestation to presenters in an effort to allow them to seek funding from other sources. Also, depending on availability of funds, a limited number of travel grants may be available to enable presenters to participate at the conference. If participation is conditional on such funding, this will need to be indicated in the abstract submission. Please note that there is no guarantee of funding becoming available and that final selection for participation at the conference will be conditional on funding for travel having been secured.
Last date for submitting the abstracts is October 31, 2011.
