GSRC invites applications for the submissions of papers/manuscripts for Kohl’s first issue- one of the academic journals on gender and sexuality based in the MENA region slated for publication in May 2015. Young activists, independent researchers, graduate students, fresh graduates and seminal contributors in the field are particularly encouraged to apply.
Kohl is an initiative of the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center (GSRC) in the Middle East, South West Asia and North Africa region.

Topics: Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
- Redefining the terms and concepts around identity, gender, and sexuality.
- Counteracting Orientalist manifestations and influences in the MENA grassroots movements with contextualized strategies for the advancement of gender and sexuality.
- Women’s and sexual rights movements: social, cultural, and legal challenges to organize and adaptability to change.
- Displacing the idea of individualistic “visibility” in favor of “ambiguous visibilities”.
- Politicizing and depoliticizing sexuality within a shifting notion of nation-states.
- The interplay of private and public spaces in questions of gender and sexuality in the MENA.
- Mobility across borders and changing geopolitical landscapes in relation to refugees, migrants, asylum seekers, and host cultures.
- Theories of intersectionality in regional efforts and in specific encounters.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants can be young activists, independent researchers, graduate students, fresh graduates and seminal contributors in the mentioned fields.
- Kohl considers unpublished manuscripts of original research and unpublished manuscripts that critically engage with existing literature and theories.
- The submitted manuscripts should not be under consideration at another publication platform, nor should they be submitted simultaneously to another journal.
- Acts of plagiarism will disqualify the manuscript from consideration.
Manuscript Format
- Every manuscript should be uploaded separately as a single Microsoft Word (doc. or docx.) file. Authors will be asked to fill their information separately on the online form before uploading a document.
- Each submitted document should include the following:
- A cover page that contains:
- The title of the manuscript
- An abstract that does not exceed 200 words
- 4 to 6 keywords
- The body of the paper
- Bibliographical references
- (Optional) Appendices, charts, and tables, if any.
- A cover page that contains:
- Length: Manuscripts of original research should not exceed 7,500 words in length, including the title, abstract, keywords, footnotes, references, appendices, and any additional reference. Theoretical manuscripts should not exceed 5,000 words in length, including the title, abstract, keywords, footnotes, references, appendices, and any additional reference.
- Style and References: Style is left to the convenience of the author, provided a single style is adopted and followed in a consistent manner.
- In addition to the above mentioned guidelines for style, reference style for bibliographies and works cited should include the following: the name of the author, the title of the piece, the source (book, journal, periodical, etc…), the year of publication, and the publisher.
- Language: Manuscripts must be in Arabic, English, and French language.
