Description:
The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) is designed to support small projects proposed and implemented by local organizations in Lebanon. In providing funding for small projects that offer direct social, economic, or technical assistance to local populations, the CFLI contributes to the overall goal of reducing poverty.
Canada’s commitment to Lebanon reflects its overall diplomatic and development objectives in the Middle East. Canada’s aims are to promote peace, democracy, and security, support socio-economic development, and achieve progress in governance through country-led development programs.
Canada’s long-standing relationship of development cooperation with Lebanon has evolved in response to the country’s changing needs. Those needs increased dramatically as a result of the 33-day conflict in the summer of 2006 between Israel and Hezbollah, a terrorist group listed under Canadian law.
