Irish Red Cross has announced Conference on contemporary challenges in international humanitarian law. The focus of this conference is on how international humanitarian law (IHL) protects civilians and the sick and injured in armed conflict. The conference will bring together experienced and emerging legal practitioners, academics, partners and students to explore the many contemporary challenges to IHL and contribute to moving the current debate forward.
The conference will take place in the Royal Irish Academy, Dawson Street, Dublin 2 on Thursday 17 October 2013.
Thematic areas-
- The typology of armed conflicts and the issues arising relating to the deployment of multinational forces in operations which are diverse in scope with multifaceted operational goals.
- The civilization of armed conflict and the obstacles to humanitarian assistance this creates as well as the seeming abandonment of principles of precaution by some parties to armed conflicts.
- New technologies including cyber-warfare; the use of remote controlled weapons systems and the development of automated weapons systems and autonomous systems.
- Conflation of armed conflict and terrorism.
Eligibility & Criteria-
- The call for abstracts is open to any interested individual.
- University academics
- Masters and PhD Students
- Staff working for Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement, UN agencies, or other organizations working in the field of humanitarian action in situations of armed conflict
- Members (or former members) of the military.
