Future Agricultures Consortium in partnership with the Institute of Statistical Social and Economic Research (ISSER) is organizing an international conference entitled ‘Young People, Farming & Food: The Future of the Agrifood Sector in Africa’ that will be held on 19-21 March 2012 in Accra Ghana.
Conference Highlights
The conference will critically examine, from both research and policy perspectives:
– Dominant and alternative framings and narratives, and recent empirical data, relating to how young people engage with the agrifood sector in Africa (as producers, entrepreneurs, employees, consumers and citizens)
– The dynamics of change in different components of the agri-food sector and the implications of these dynamics for young people
– The implications for young people of alternative policy approaches to the development of the agrifood sector
General Call for Papers
In this context, the organizers have issued a general call for papers that offer rigorous analysis from various critical perspectives around the topics and questions related to the issues viz. Agrifood trends in SSA, Employment, Livelihood diversification / de-agrarianisation, Life and work aspirations, Education and training, Migration, Gender, Conflict areas, Agrifood policy, Young people as agrifood entrepreneurs, New markets and niches, Young people, modern farming and African Green Revolution, Climate change.
Comparative studies and welcome proposals for thematic panels are also encouraged.

Travel grants
A limited number of travel grants will be made available to enable presenters to participate in this event. Please indicate in your application whether you would like to apply for a travel grant. This will entail a further application. Note that there is no guarantee of funding.
Last date for submitting the abstracts of proposed papers (up to 500 words) is August 31, 2011.
