The International Development Research Center (IDRC) invites applications for John G. Bene Fellowship. The Fellowship is open to Canadians and permanent residents of Canada who are, at present, pursuing their master’s or doctoral studies at a Canadian university. Candidates must be pursuing his studies in forestry or agro-forestry with social sciences. The Fellowship is awarded in order to help promote field research on the effect of forest resources on the overall welfare of people in developing countries.
The applicants, whose work is the most beneficial for under-privileged people in developing countries, will be considered for the award.
Though IDRC supports research in all developing countries, yet at present research proposals in Burma (Myanmar), Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Eastern Europe, or Central Asia are not eligible for the competition.
Field research proposed in the following countries or territories must be approved by IDRC:
Afghanistan, Burundi, Central African Republic, Congo (Democratic Republic of), Côte d’Ivoire, Chad, Eritrea, Gabon, Guinea Bissau, Korea (Democratic People’s Republic of), Liberia, Libya, Papua New Guinea, Small Island States [including Comoros, Equatorial Guinea, Mauritius, São Tomé and Principe, Seychelles, Timor-Leste and Oceania (Cook Islands, Fiji, Nauru, Kiribati, Palau, Marshall Islands, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tuvalu, Tongo, Vanuatu, Wallis & Futuna)], Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Taiwan (Republic of China), West Bank and Gaza, Yemen, Zimbabwe.
Following are the prerequisites for being an eligible candidate:
- He should be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.
- He should be enrolled at a Canadian university at the master’s or doctoral level
- He should be pursuing his studies in forestry or agroforestry with social sciences. Students from interdisciplinary programs, like environmental studies, can also apply, provided their programs contain the required areas of study.
- The research proposal must be approved by the thesis supervisor
- The proposed field research must take place in a developing country
- Have proof of affiliation with an institution or organization in the developing-country region(s) in which the research will take place
- Before receiving the award, course work must be completed and comprehensive exams should be cleared.
The duration of the award correspond to the period of field research. However, this will be no less than 3 consecutive months and no more than 12 months.
Expenses up to CA$20,000 a year will be covered by the award.
