Status of Women Canada is a federal government organization that works for gender equality and participation of women in the economic and social life of Canada. The priority areas of Status of Women Canada are enhancing the financial security of women; supporting women leadership; and stopping violence against women. It also provides strategic policy advice and gender-based analysis support relating to women in Canada.
Status of Women Canada is currently seeking proposals from organizations for funding to carry out projects that promote equality and support the advancement of women and girls living in rural and remote communities and small urban centres.
Who is eligible?
Incorporated not-for-profit and for-profit Canadian organizations with the mandate, experience, expertise and capacity to deliver the proposed project.
Who is not eligible?
Individuals, unions or co-operatives. Federal, provincial, territorial, municipal or Aboriginal governments or their agencies. School boards, hospitals or other organizations whose mandate was created by a government. Universities or colleges, including university- or college-governed institutes.
What can be funded?
Eligible expenditure categories are detailed in the budget form. Additional eligible expenses include childcare in support of the parent’s participation in project activities, hospitality costs in the course of planned activities and meetings, etc.
What cannot be funded?
Activities that have already taken place. Research and polling activities. Domestic advocacy activities. Lobbying of federal, provincial/territorial or municipal governments. Ongoing activities, including operation or administration. Capital expenditures (such as land, buildings, vehicles or other major capital costs). Travel and other expenses incurred outside of Canada. Costs incurred by applicants before a funding decision has been made by the Minister for Status of Women.
How do I apply?
Once you have chosen a theme and reviewed the project activities, expected outcomes and deliverables, you can fill out the application form. Make sure to indicate which of the two following themes your project will address:
- Theme 1: Community planning to reduce violence against women and girls in rural communities and small urban centres in Canada.
- Theme 2: Community planning for women’s economic security in rural and remote communities in Canada.
What else do I need to know?
The Women’s Program cannot fund 100% of a project’s costs. Applicant organizations must either cover some of the costs themselves or arrange alternate sources of funding. Contributions can be either financial or in-kind (e.g., the time a staff or board member spends overseeing a project, the use by project staff of computers or office space). If your proposal is approved, you will be asked to provide further details on your organization’s intended contribution(s), and/or commitments of support from other sources.
