The Toronto Public Health Youth Grants (TPHYG) were created to support youth engagement work for tobacco use prevention as well as physical activity, healthy eating and injury prevention. Youth Engagement is an approach which involves implementing programs that are led by the youths and endorsed by the adults. The result of this approach comes in the form of benefits for youths and the whole community. Young people also achieve a sense of empowerment and contribute for the welfare of the society.
Purpose
The Toronto Public Health Youth Grant program is intended to motivate and create opportunities for youth engagement and action on health issues within Toronto. Successful projects will be youth-driven and community based.
Scope
The primary focus of the TPH Youth Grant program is tobacco use and exposure including Smoke Free Movies and Tobacco Free Sports and Recreation. Secondary project components can include physical activity, sports and recreation, healthy eating, mental health promotion, substance and alcohol misuse and injury prevention.
Eligibility
– Youth-driven project
– Community based
– Youth group must be partnered with a youth serving organization that has a charitable or incorporation number
– Youth serving organization able to provide project support and act as holders of funds
– Clear project outline with a focus on tobacco use and exposure
– Inclusion of secondary health promotion elements
– Completion of an achievable workplan with a project end date of June 30, 2012
– Youth groups must consist of participants between the ages of 13 – 24 years of age
– Youth groups must be located in the City of Toronto
Funds Available
Successful youth group applicants will have access to $1,000 – $5,000 in grant funding to use between October 2011 and June 2012.
Eligibility: (applicants must)
– Address at least two health topics one of which must be Tobacco Use and Exposure (See examples of topics on page 6-9 of the application guide)
– Reflect principles of youth engagement in their proposal
– Youth serving organization must have a charitable number or an incorporation number
– Include adult support from the organization that is applying
– Comprise of youth between the ages of 13-24
