The University of Canterbury seeks applications for The C Wright Mills Scholarship in Sociology and Anthropology from graduates of any University in New Zealand or of the University of the South Pacific.
This scholarship was established in 1985 in memory of Jean Margaretta Rhoda Morgan and Peter Warmsley Sedgwick, and as a tribute to C. Wright Mills, noted American sociologist. The current value of the scholarship is $2,000 per annum.
Description
1. The scholarship shall be awarded by the Council of the University of Canterbury after it has received the recommendation of a Selection Committee.
2. Candidates for the scholarship shall submit a paper outlining their approach to sociological and anthropological research in the form of a research proposal. The paper shall be typewritten and of not less than 5,000 words in length.
3. In the event of two or more candidates being considered to be of equal merit, preference shall be given to the candidate whose financial circumstances are such that he or she would have difficulty in completing the course without financial assistance.
4. The scholarship may be held concurrently with any bursary, scholarship or fellowship of equal or greater value than this scholarship, unless the conditions of the other award preclude this.
5. The scholarship shall be tenable normally for one year but may be extended for a further year on the recommendation of the Academic Board if in the opinion of the selection committee the holder is able to demonstrate by way of a report on the work that satisfactory progress is being made and that the progress is consistent with the criteria for selection.
6. Normally one scholarship shall be awarded each year. However, if the accumulated funds permit the Council may award an additional scholarship in any year.
7. If in any year no appointment to the scholarship is made, the income for the year shall be added to the capital of the fund or shall be held in reserve to provide a second scholarship in a subsequent year, as the Council may decide.
Last date for submitting the application form along with research paper is November 1, 2011
