The Selected Professions Fellowships Program was started by American Association of University Women with an aim to support women in professional degree programs in fields where women participation is very low.
In continuation to its commitment to empower women, the AAUW is currently inviting applications for Selected Professions Fellowships from women candidates who are US citizens /permanent residents and are willing to pursue a full-time degree program at accredited U.S. institutions during the 2012- 2013 fellowship year. The students will pursue any one of the designated degree programs where women’s participation traditionally has been low.
Award Information
The Selected Professions Fellowship stipends range from $5,000 to $18,000. Requests that do not fall within this stipend range will be ineligible. Stipends are awarded in two equal payments. These fellowships fund academic and living expenses for a period of 12 months while a fellow pursues full-time study. The fellowships do not fund:
- Research equipment, research assistants and similar costs
- Publication costs
- Travel to professional meetings, conferences or seminars
- Repayment of loans or other personal obligations
- Institutional (overhead) costs

Eligible Programs
Selected Professions Fellowships are awarded for the following programs:
- Architecture (M.Arch, M.S.Arch)
- Computer/Information Sciences (M.S.)
- Engineering (M.E., M.S.)
- Mathematics/Statistics (M.S.)
Fellowships in the following degree programs are restricted to women of color, who have been underrepresented in these fields:
- Business Administration (M.B.A.) – applicants may apply for 2nd year of study only
- Law (J.D.) – applicants may apply for 3rd year of study only
- Medicine (M.D., D.O.) – applicants may apply for 3rd or 4th year of study only
Eligibility Criteria
These fellowships are open to women who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States who have achieved high standards of academic excellence and show promise of distinction in their respective fields. There are no restrictions on an applicant’s age or institution of study within the United States.
Applicants must be full-time students at an accredited U.S. institution during the fellowship year, and should be pursuing a course of study in the U.S. over the full academic year.
Selected Professions Fellowships are not open to previous recipients of any AAUW national fellowship or grant (not including branch or local awards or Community Action Grants). Also, AAUW boards, committees, panels, staff and current interns are not eligible to apply for fellowship and grant awards.
