The Blakemore Freeman foundation is currently inviting applications for its Language Grants Program.
The Blakemore Freeman Fellowships fund an academic year of advanced language study abroad of Chinese, Japanese, Korean and selected Southeast Asian languages. Since 1990, the Foundation has awarded over $14 million in language grants to individuals using an East or Southeast Asian language in their careers.
For 2016 grants, study must start between June 2016 and May 2017.
Language eligible for grants
- For Japanese, the foundation funds study at the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Yokohama, Japan.
- For Chinese, the foundation fund study at the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing and at the International Chinese Language Program at National Taiwan University in Taipei.
- For Korean, the foundation recommend study at Seoul National University, Sogang University, or the Inter-University Center for Korean Language Studies at Sungkyunkwan University. the foundation will consider study at other Korean language programs on a case-by-case basis during the application review process.
- Approval of language programs for study of languages of SE Asia will be considered on an individual basis during the application review process.
Benefits
- Blakemore Refresher Grants are intended to cover basic expenses, at a graduate student level, necessary to pursue full-time intensive language study in Asia, including tuition and approved tutoring fees, plus a stipend for travel, living and study expenses.
- Tuition for the language program, and tutoring fees (if applicable) are covered in full.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for a grant, an applicant must:
- Be an individual in mid-career, established in academia, public service or the private sector, and a member of one of the following groups:
- Former Blakemore Freeman Fellows.
- Professors teaching in an Asian field at a university or college in the United States.
- Individuals working in an Asian field.
- Be pursuing a professional, business, technical or academic career that involves the regular use of a modern East or Southeast Asian language.
- Have a college undergraduate degree.
- Be at an advanced level in the language.
- Be able to devote oneself exclusively to full-time intensive language study during the term of the grant; grants are not made for part-time study or research.
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
