The German Marshall Fund of the United States, in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Washington, DC, is now accepting applications for The Ronald D. Asmus Freedom Journalism Contest.
Eligibility
Applicants for The Ronald D. Asmus Freedom Journalism Contest must be undergraduate or graduate-level journalism students from U.S. universities and currently be enrolled or be recent graduates of the 2010 or 2011. Entries must address in some way the situation of democracy in Belarus. Students may interpret the topic as creatively as they see fit.
There are two categories: print and multimedia. All entries must be previously unpublished and original works to the competition.
A first-place prize of $5,000, awarded from the complete pool of graduate and undergraduate entries, will be given in both the print and multimedia categories. Runners-up prizes of $2,000 each will be awarded to one undergraduate and one graduate-level student in both categories. There will be a total of six prize winners across the competition.
Winners will also receive travel expenses from their home in the United States to Washington, DC, for the award ceremony at the Embassy of Poland.
The winning and runners-up entries will be published by the German Marshall Fund.
Print Requirements:
- All pieces of the application should be labeled with the entrant’s full name.
- All entries must be original works between 1400 and 1600 words, typed 12pt Times New Roman Font, with 1-inch margins.
Multimedia Requirements:
- All pieces of the application should be labeled with the entrant’s full name.
Entries will be accepted in the following formats:
Photo Essays
- Should not exceed 15 slides
- Should be submitted in one self-contained file or presentation on a DVD
Video
- Should not exceed 3 minutes
- File type: .mov, .mp4, and .flv will be accepted
- Entry should be submitted on a DVD
Flash
- Limited to one page of presentation in .flv format
- Entry should be submitted on a DVD
Audio stories
- Should not exceed 3 minutes
- Only .mp3 files will be accepted
- Entry should be submitted on a CD
