Google Journalism Fellowship 2014 (a journalism fellowship by Google, the company dedicated to making the world’s information easily accessible) is now open for undergraduate, graduate and journalism students in the US who are passionate about journalism and the role that technology can play in the industry and the pursuit of their craft. The major purpose of the fellowship program is to encourage journalists around the globe in promotion of quality journalism for vibrant and functioning society.
First-rate analytical, communications, research, and writing skills will be an added qualification for the fellowship. Students with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and efficiently and to work smartly and resourcefully in a fast-paced environment are encouraged to apply. Applicants with some experience with HTML, Javascript or another web programming language and experience with Microsoft Excel or a database system is an advantage.
The 10 weeks fellowship will commence at Google in Mountain View, California and second to the last week, classes will be held in any one of the participating organizations (the Center for Investigative Reporting, the Committee to Protect Journalists, Investigative Reporters & Editors, Pew Research Center’s Journalism Project, Poynter, Nieman Journalism Lab, PRI.org, ProPublica, Sunlight Foundation and the Texas Tribune)
Eligibility Criteria –
- Applicant must be at least 18 years of age, based in the US and a student enrolled in or accepted into an accredited institution including (but not necessarily limited to) colleges, universities, masters programs, PhD programs and undergraduate programs. Eligibility is based on enrollment in an accredited university by January 1, 2014.
- Applicant must have demonstrated or stated commitment to journalism – especially in the fields of data driven journalism or freedom of expression; must have an interest in exploring and creating business models to help the industry in the digital age. Students with excellent academic record, professional/extracurricular/volunteer activities, subject matter expertise are eligible to apply.
