The United States Department of State Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration is accepting grant applications from non-profits with or without 501(c)(3) and international organizations to implement the NGO (non-governmental organization) Programs Benefiting Refugees and Asylum Seekers in South Africa. The program falls under the US government Overseas Refugee Assistance Programs for Africa.
Project proposals must fall in between $100,000 and $300,000 to implement the program for maximum 12 months period. Applicants are encouraged to design programs benefiting potentially vulnerable and underserved groups (women, children, LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or intersex) elderly, sick, persons with disabilities, stateless persons, and other minorities).
Eligibility Criteria:
- Eligible applicants are – nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status with IRS, other than institutions of higher education; nonprofits without 501(c)(3) status with IRS, other than institutions of higher education; and international Organizations.
- Proposed activities should support refugees and asylum seekers residing in South Africa with priority areas being urban areas such as Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, and Pretoria.
- Applicant NGOs must demonstrate a working relationship with UNHCR. A letter of support from UNHCR for the proposed activities is strongly recommended.
- Proposals must have a concrete implementation plan with well-conceived objectives and indicators.
- Proposals should focus on advocacy and support for refugee protection and access to basic social services in urban settings in one of the following sectors – protection, assistance, and livelihood.
- Proposals must demonstrate how the applicant will coordinate with host government authorities and UNHCR as well as with other local and international NGOs active in the same area and sector.
- Proposals should indicate how the proposed assistance would fill an identified gap, why that gap is a priority, as well as how the gap and the beneficiaries were identified.
Proposals must be submitted via grants.gov. Applicants are encouraged to read the General NGO Guidelines and register to grants.gov as soon as possible because it may take two weeks to finalize the registration.
