Applications are invited for Great Lakes Long-Term Biological Monitoring Program to focus on whole-lake responses to changes in loadings of anthropogenic substances, so sampling is largely restricted to the relatively homogeneous offshore waters of each lake. Zooplankton have been an integral part of the program since 1983, while benthos was added to the program in 1997. The community structure of the biota has been rapidly changing in many areas of the Great Lakes in recent years. Of particular interest are changes in invasive species populations and their effects.
Applications are requested for the development and implementation of a continuing research/monitoring Program that will adequately track changes in the Great Lakes biotic community, including introduced species. The purpose of the Program is to achieve a better understanding of the underlying causes of those changes, and to provide information to the public, water quality managers and fisheries managers. The Program includes: taxonomic analysis of zooplankton and benthos, chlorophyll a analysis, the collecting of samples from the Great Lakes, expansion of efforts to identify invasive species, and research into several aspects of community change and monitoring methodology.
