The University of Peace (UPEACE) and the University of Connecticut (UConn) have issued a call for applications for their new exchange programme, the “Economic Empowerment Programme”.
The Economic Empowerment Programme provides fellowships for 24 young professionals from Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Peru (six from each country) as well as 24 young professionals from the U.S., in order to provide them with a transformative fellowship experience. Activities will facilitate participant interaction and learning on how to use entrepreneurial concepts and techniques in business ventures, as well as how to provide increased employment opportunities and sustainable, inclusive economic development in their respective communities.
The U.S. State Department provides funding and oversight for the programme. Candidate recruitment in Latin America as well as the Latin American-based exchange programme are managed by the University for Peace in coordination with partner universities in Colombia and Peru. The University of Connecticut manages the exchange programme in the U.S. and overall oversight of the programme.
Requisites:
• To be a Costa Rican, Panamanian, Colombian or Peruvian national between the ages of 24 and 40 • To be a professional employed by the government, an NGO, an educational institution, a self-led business, a business trade association, etc. • To be willing to conduct a small social change project (funded through a mini-grant) in amarginalized community in their home country • To demonstrate proficiency in English • To have the possibility to travel to the U.S. for one month, participate in a Latin-American based exchange for two weeks, and to be involved in the implementation of a social change project
