USAID is currently inviting eligible PhD and master’s candidates to apply for their science and technology expertise overseas to do research in collaboration with hosting organizations around the world.
The USAID Research and Innovation Fellowships offer U.S. students, scientists, researchers, and innovators a unique opportunity to collaborate with hosts in developing countries and apply their scientific, social scientific, and technological expertise to development challenges overseas.
Applicants will need to attend one of the following Universities-
- Arizona State University
- Rutgers University
- University of Chicago
- University of California – Berkeley
- University of California – Davis
- The University of Notre Dame
What fellowship covers?
The Fellowship will provide each Fellow with a travel allowance, in addition to their NSF research grant, to be used for USAID Research and Innovation fellowship-related costs only. An estimated itemized budget must be submitted with the Fellow’s application for final approval of funding. Costs can include items such as travel to host country, in-country housing and transportation, research supplies, etc. Funding may not be used for the purchase of large/durable equipment or institutional overhead/expenses for the host.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant must be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident.
- Applicants must be a graduate student in attendance at a U.S. University.
- Applicants will need to fall into one of the following categories:
- NSF Graduate Research Fellows-GROW with USAID. Graduate students who have an active award through the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) by the Graduate Research Fellowships Program (GRFP). These students will be awarded funding and an RI Fellowship from USAID through NSF.
- USAID University Partners. Students from participating units within one of the six universities above. These students will receive an RI Fellowship and funding from USAID through their universities.
