The Daniel Pearl Foundation invites early to mid-career journalists from Muslim-majority countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Tunisia, Turkey and Yemen and other Muslim-majority countries) to spend five to six months fellowship program and enrich their capabilities at publications in the United States.
The fellowship program will begin in March with two week orientation seminar in Washington DC. The fellows and staff will attend seminars focused on writing, editing, multimedia reporting and investigative reporting/Computer Assisted Reporting in the middle of the program. The final seminar will take place in Washington where the fellows will compare and evaluate their experiences and discuss their impressions of the American media.
The fellows will gain experience in reporting, writing, editing, and editorial decision-making that will enhance future professional performance; be exposed to the technological changes occurring in the industry; and gain practical understanding of the function and significance of the free press in American society. They will be able to transfer knowledge gained on the program to colleagues back home.
The fellowship covers all costs of program-related international and domestic U.S. travel, health insurance and provides a monthly stipend to cover basic living expenses.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be journalists who are citizens of Muslim-majority countries.
- Applicants must be current full-time employed journalists for the news or editorial departments of independent newspapers, magazines, wire services, or online publications of general public interest.
- Applicants must have at least three years of full-time professional experience as a journalist.
- Applicants can be with early to mid-career status and between 25 to 35 years of age.
- Applicants must demonstrate personal commitment to journalistic career.
- Applicants must have ability and desire to share what is learned on the fellowship with other journalists at home.
- Applicants must be endorsed by the management of the home news organization.
- Applicant must be proficient in English language.
