Instituto Sacatar, Brazil is currently seeking applications under UNESCO/Aschberg bursaries for Artists Program for three bursaries that are to be awarded, in visual arts, creative writing (in any language) and music composition, for artists between the ages of 25 and 35, born and living in Africa, Asia, Russia, the former Soviet Republics, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand and/or the Pacific Islands.
Bursary Provisions
- a two-month stay at the Sacatar estate on the island of Itaparica, including:
- a room with private bath;
- a separate studio;
- all meals (except Saturday evenings, Sundays and holidays);
- laundry service;
- logistical support for the execution of the artist’s intentions.
UNESCO/Aschberg provides and manages the travel arrangements, a round-trip airfare at best rates in economy class.
Sacatar provides artists the time and space to produce new work and to interact with the dynamic culture of Bahia. There is no additional stipend; the artist is responsible for his or her own working materials and any additional personal expenses (local transportation, incidental meals, etc.) for the duration of the residency.
Application Submission
Visual arts have been interpreted in the broadest terms possible: painting, sculpture, handicrafts, printmaking, photography, ceramics, film, video, installation, performance art, etc. Creative writing applicants may submit writing samples in any language, but the samples must also be accompanied by a translation into at least one of these languages: English, French, Spanish or Portuguese. Every effort will be made to evaluate the writing in its original language, but if not viable, the writing samples will be evaluated in translation.
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for the UNESCO/Aschberg bursary to the Instituto Sacatar, applicants must:
- Be 25-35 years old at the time of application;
- Be born and continue to live in Africa, Eastern Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Asia, Australia, New Zealand or the Pacific Islands.
