Gross root level development work deserves a new look in terms of indicators for assessment of impact made by any development intervention. The indicator must be discernible not necessarily quantitative to measure the impact.
Funding should coincide with indicators envisaged in the planning proposal. Despite decades of development works at gross root level, we are not in sight of any indicators which local specific rather than universally patterned vision which most of the time remains alien to local culture .
This is the area still remains untrodden and has to be stressed for close recogntion.
Introduction:
UNGOM umbrella is a local network working on migration in Punt land.
It is formed on 31st of March 2009. The idea was specifically from
member organizations to form the body of an umbrella that can share
common resources in terms of capacity building, implementing migration
projects and other community empowerment activities as an umbrella.
The body composed of seven local NGO’s implementing mixed migration,
Water and sanitation, Peace and human rights activities in Punt land
state of Somalia.the body has under taken different projects, one of
it is partnership is IOM.
Executive summary
Mixed migration flows have been increasing at alarming rate in Somalia
for the last two decades despite the dangers caused by the adventure.
Most of the mixed migrants hail from south central Somalia and
Ethiopia; the regions devastated by conflicts and insecurity. The
migrants normally cross Red Sea to Arabian Gulf in search of better
sustainability of livelihood. Few who normally escape from the dangers
manage to cross red Sea, has been offering financial support to their
families while in Arab countries thus attracting higher numbers to try
the adventure. However, unprecedented risks coupled by human rights
abuse such as torture, rape as well as killing occur.
Therefore, UNGOM and its member organizations jointly address the
rights of mixed migrants and plan to mobilize the local community to
protect the mixed migrant’s rights.
Overall objective
Improve protection/rights of mixed migrants in punt land regions.
looking forward kind support of UN -HABITAT Urban Youth fund Team.
