Ford Foundation in co-operation with Brooks and Joan Fortune Family Foundation, the Scripps Howard Foundation and the Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation is pleased to invite fellows for Bringing Home the World: International Reporting Fellowship Program for Minority Journalists to level the playing field, sending well-briefed journalists of color overseas to report on important issues that resonate in their communities.
International Reporting Fellowship offers journalists of color based in the U.S. the opportunity to play an important role in covering international developments. The fellowship builds on the participants’ skills and confidence in traveling abroad for global stories, making them more competitive in the newsroom. And their reports will also bring fresh perspectives of the world to U.S. audiences.
The International Reporting Fellowship is giving journalists of color the skills they need to become future leaders in the field. They have an unprecedented chance to explore issues beyond U.S. borders, enriching their experience as professional journalists. And they will bring the fresh perspectives needed on foreign affairs, religion and other topics in an increasingly complex world.

Project proposal should include the following points-
- Provide a succinct, one- or two-sentence description of the topic applicant plans to focus on during the fellowship.
- Provide a brief background of this issue. Explain if and how it has been covered previously, how it is relevant to local community, and what aspects remain to be examined in future coverage.
- Explain the international dimensions of this issue and why traveling overseas to research and report on the topic will enhance the overall coverage.
- Outline a preliminary logistical strategy for this assignment: When would applicant prefer to travel? What is the likely duration of the trip? To what country or regions will applicant travel? List any special considerations about the travel that may be significant in planning, such as climate, challenging conditions, civil unrest, special safety concerns, special needs, etc.
- Explain whether applicant already have contacts in the country, who in the country can assist applicant, whether they know who applicant will interview and meet with, and how applicant will travel and live while abroad. If applicant do not have this information, list what type of help they expect to need in planning their assignment.
- Explain how applicant expect to report about the issue applicant will cover. Will this result in a single news story, a multimedia production, a feature article, a series of articles or broadcast stories, commentaries, a special supplement or TV/Radio show within their news organization, etc.? Do applicant expect to publish/broadcast in news outlets other than their own?
- If applicants are a freelance journalist, please outline their publishing strategy. How do they plan to get the story published? Outline any potential news outlets they plan to pitch the story to.
- Explain the proposed timeline they will follow while reporting their stories, keeping in mind that the program orientation is in May and all stories must be published by September 30, 2013.
