Call for papers are invited by The Graduate Journal of Social Sciences (GJSS) for special edition on Sexuality in Focus. This issue is inspired by the Network of Interdisciplinary Women’s Studies in Europe (NOISE) 2011 Summer School, which was hosted by the University of Utrecht (the Netherlands). This year’s theme was ‘The Miraculous (dis)appearing Act of Sexuality: Mapping the Study of Sexuality in Europe, 1960-2010’. Central to this summer school was the exploration of what has appeared in discourses of sexualities and what has been missing. The special issue aims to further explore this complex and multifaceted subject.
Part of this issue will be dedicated to critical discussions of recent literature on sexuality. Company invite scholarly contributions from postgraduate students, early career academics and activists engaged in LGBT, sexuality, feminist, queer, women’s and gender studies or related areas, to submit a book review for consideration.
How to submit?
- The GJSS welcomes the submission of articles, book reviews, comments and feedback. We encourage the submission of work, by MSc/MA/MS, MPhil, PhD students and young and more senior academics. All material submitted must not have appeared elsewhere, nor be submitted for publication elsewhere while under consideration by GJSS. All articles must correspond to the prohibition of plagiarism outlined by the Society of Authors.
- Articles must be sent by email to the editor by the submission date as a Word Attachment and must include an article submission form.
- By sending in the article submission form, it is taken that the authors have given their consent to publish the article under the conditions outlined by the GJSS.

Before submitting articles authors must remember the following-
- Length– The editors ask that authors adhere strictly to the maximum word-count permitted and consider this a requirement for acceptance of submissions. This is of essence for the publication to maintain a coherent and consistent style, as well as a basic and unambiguously equal standard for all authors. Moreover, because the GJSS endeavours to ensure a high level of efficiency, academic quality and completion rates, it is important that authors follow the guidelines and deadlines set out by the Editorial Committee. Exceptions, in this sense, are not to be permitted.
- Articles- The recommended length is 5000-8000 words (including footnotes but excluding bibliographic references).
- Short essays-The recommended length is 2-3,000 words. The short papers will cover discussion pieces, case studies and research notes. This is to provide space for ideas and projects that represent work in progress and as such might benefit from peer review and public discussion.
- Book Reviews- Book reviews should be 1000-1500 words. Additional details must include; the full title of the book under review, the Author, publisher, date and ISDN of the book.
- Conference Feedback- 1000 words. This is for reports of any relevant conferences, seminars and lectures. Additional details should include, the speaker, the organisers, title of event, the location and date.
- Announcements-This is for up and coming seminars, lectures and conferences. Details should include, dates, times, organiser and contact details.
- Essays should be fully referenced, amalgamated and signalled serially in the text of the article by superscripts. References should be typed in the text as (Author’s Surname, Date of Publication, Page Number). More extensive references and comments should appear as footnotes at the bottom of each page.
- A full bibliography of the sources used should be included at the end of the article. For books, citations should give the author, the title of the book (italics), the editors/translators if applicable, city, publisher and date of publication, and the appropriate page number(s) or volume and page number if applicable. For periodicals, citations should include the author’s name, title of the article (in quotations), the title of the periodical (italicised), issue information (volume, issue number, date), and the relevant page number(s).
- Quotations should be in single quotes. Substantial quotations (four lines or more) should be indented and single spaced without quotation marks.
- Format-
- Main titles: 14 pt Arial Bold (not in caps)
- Body text: 11 pt Arial, 1.5 line spacing
- Paragraphs: no indents, double spacing between paragraphs
- All text, apart from titles to be justified (block text)
- Subheadings in the text: 11 pt Arial Bold. (not in caps)
- Margins: standard
- Page numbers: to be centered in the footer, Arial 8 pt
- Image references/ credits: Arial 8 point
