The global tourism industry is continually expanding and diversifying, becoming one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world.
According to figures from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), from 1950 to 2010 international tourist arrivals grew at an annual rate of 6.2 per cent, from 25 million to 940 million.Globally, tourism contributes to the generation of over 230 million jobs and represents 9.2 per cent of global GDP, exceeding U.S. $ 5,750 billion (WTTC, 2009).
The UNWTO guidelines for sustainable tourism development and sustainable management practices (2004) state that they are applicable to all forms of tourism in all types of destinations, including mass tourism, business tourism, ecotourism and all other segments.
