Each year, the Committee for the United Nations Population Award presents an UN Population Award to an individual(s) and/or institution(s) in recognition of outstanding contributions to increasing the awareness of population questions and to their solution. UN Population award is prestigious award in the world.
The Award, which was established by the General Assembly in November 1981, in resolution 36/201, and was first presented in 1983, consists of a gold medal, a diploma and a monetary prize.
Written nominations for the United Nations Population Award may be received from the following categories of nominators.
1. Governments of Member States.
2. Intergovernmental organizations engaged in population-related activities.
3. Population-related non-governmental organizations having consultative status with the United Nations.
4. University professors of population or population-related studies and heads of population-related institutions.
5. Laureates of the United Nations Population Award.
In 2011 United Nations Population Award was awarded to Iranian Demographer, Mohammad Jalal Abbasi-Shavazi, and an African research institution, L’Institut de Formation et de Recherche Démographique,
