The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in collaboration with the African Union Commission has launched the African Union Kwame Nkrumah Regional Award for Scientific Women 2014. The Regional Prize dedicated to women invites women in ECOWAS member countries to participate in the award program. The award aims to contribute to the representation of women in the field of Science, Technology and Innovation.
The yearly award program ‘African Union Kwame Nkrumah Scientific Awards’ was established with the objective is to give out scientific awards to top African scientists for their scientific achievements and valuable discoveries and findings. The program is implemented at national level for young researchers, regional level for women scientists and continental level open to all scientists.
A prize worth US$20,000 will be awarded in each of the two different scientific areas for their scientific achievements and valuable discoveries and findings. The winners will be awarded during the African Union day on 9 September 2014 in the AU Chairman’s county.

- Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation, etc.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant must be from one of the following 15 West African States that constitute ECOWAS- Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinee, Guinee Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.
- Applicant must be a woman (female) professional in the field of science and technology.
- Applicant must be in one of the fields identified by the competition.
- Applicant must be of good moral character and must not have been subject to any professional discipline.
Application materials include- completed application form, curriculum vitae signed and approved by the candidate’s institution, scientific publications, scientific papers, works, certificates and diplomas, one confidential letter from head of the institution, and two recommendation/support letter.
