AFFIRM is now granting 5 fellowships to candidates. this is a joint initiative of the Psychology Department at Stellenbosch University and the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the University of Cape Town in the field of public mental health research training.
The Africa Focus on Intervention Research for Mental Health (AFFIRM) is a research and capacity development Hub established in 6 countries: South Africa, Ghana, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Ethiopia, with the following aims-
- to investigate strategies for narrowing the treatment gap for mental disorders in sub-Saharan Africa,
- to build individual and institutional capacity for intervention research in sub-Saharan Africa,
- to establish a network of collaboration between researchers, NGOs and government agencies that facilitates the translation of research knowledge into policy and practice and
- to collaborate with other regional hubs
The 5 Fellowships are each worth USD 5489 and cover travel and accommodation (USD 2828) and tuition fees (USD 2661).
Registration–
Registration is for a minimum of 1 year. For administrative purposes, students will have to register with one of the collaborating universities i.e. with UCT or Stellenbosch. Candidates should indicate their preference on their application, but as University require an equal number of students enrolled at each university, University cannot guarantee registration at the university of the student’s choice. The course content and requirements will be the same for both universities. Degrees will be awarded by the registering university.
Eligibility-
- be from Ghana, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Malawi or Ethiopia
- successfully gain entry to the MPhil in Public Mental Health (the details of this programme is
- included in this call overleaf), and
- undertake a research project that is aligned with the goal of AFFIRM, which is to use task
- shifting interventions to narrow the treatment gap in sub-Saharan Africa.
