The Private Enterprise Development in Low-Income Countries (PEDL) is accepting research proposals. PEDL is a joint research initiative of CEPR and DFID.

Grant Information

Exploratory Grants are research grants of between £10,000 and £35,000 that are designed to allow researchers to:

  • explore new approaches to the study of firms in low-income-countries (LICs); and
  • to develop new (or build on) existing sources of data on firms in LICs.

Research Themes

  1. Modelling market frictions in LICs using newly available data
  2. Understanding how constraints interact using micro-founded macro models
  3. The dynamics of SMEs: Informality and entrepreneurship
  4. The role of export-oriented industries in driving growth

Eligible Countries – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, India, Malawi, Mozambique, Burma, Nepal, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Tajikistan, Nigeria, Uganda, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Sudan, South Africa, Occupied Palestinian Territories, Yemen, Zambia.
