Tata group in partnership with Indian Institute of Management Calcutta is launching 2013 Tata Social Enterprise Challenge having aim of creating an ecosystem in India for social entrepreneurship that drives sustainable, scalable, and measurable social impact, the challenge invites social entrepreneurs and social enterprises with either an early-stage venture or a promising idea to submit a business plan to the competition. In round one, up to twenty teams will be selected to go through a three-week mentorship program at the IIMC campus, where they will pitch their ideas to a panel comprised of social venture capitalists, social entrepreneurs, and IIMC faculty. From that group, up to ten teams will be invited to pitch their ideas for consideration by IIMC’s Incubation Centre, with the top two teams receiving a significant amount of seed funding.
The challenge will have three rounds-
- Round 1-Teams will need to submit Impact Proposals online in the format specified.
- Semi-final round – A maximum of 20 teams selected from Round 1 will go through a 3-week mentorship programme that includes mentorship at the IIMC campus. These teams will pitch to a panel of esteemed judges consisting of social venture capitalists, social entrepreneurs, Tata leaders and faculty from IIMC.
- The grand finale – From the semi-finalists, a maximum of ten teams will be selected for the grand finale. These teams will pitch to a panel of esteemed judges, consisting of business leaders from Tata group, CEOs / founders of social venture capital funds, social entrepreneurs and faculty from IIMC.
Eligibility & Criteria-
- Teams that have an existing venture or have an idea that can create sustainable social impact are encouraged to apply.
- The team can be represented in the competition by a maximum of two members
- There is no restriction on the age or background for applicants
- If the submission is an idea, a proof of concept (E.g. prototype) is required.
- If the submission is a venture, the venture must not have been in existence for more than three years
- The entries received will be recognized by the “name” of the venture/idea
- The applicants may or may not be Indian Nationals, however, the social venture should be aimed at creating social impact in India.
Business plans for the competition will be invited for all sectors including the following focus areas–
- Agriculture, Food and Dairy
- Healthcare, Water and Sanitation
- Technology and Development
- Education
- Housing
- Handicrafts
- Energy
- Microfinance/Financial Inclusion

- Download the IMPACT PROPOSAL Format
- Complete the IMPACT PROPOSAL-Read the instructions listed in the Impact Proposal Format carefully before submitting proposal.
- Submit IMPACT PROPOSAL- Once applicant complete their impact proposal, they can submit it to the given address in the website.
