The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Kenya is currently inviting grant applications from eligible US/ non-US Organizations/ Institutions for assisting in implementation of “APHIAplus Northern Arid Lands Service Delivery” Program in Kenya. The main aim of this program is to design a health service delivery system in Kenya to ensure appropriate emphasis on maternal, newborn, child health and nutrition services within an integrated program HIV/AIDS, FP/RH, MNCH program.
Program Objectives
- Implement the APHIAplus service delivery model ensuring appropriate emphasis on maternal,
- newborn, child health and nutrition services within an integrated program HIV/AIDS, FP/RH,
- MNCH program.
- Provide innovative approaches for the “hard to reach” and nomadic populations including effective community models to ensure access to and continuation of services in an area prone to drought, famine, insecurity and other disasters.
- Ensure that essential services initiated over the last seventeen months continue, especially in HIV
- prevention, care and support.
- Demonstrate effective collaboration with USG initiatives in the ASAL areas and support program linkages with relief and recovery efforts to improve health systems.
Funding Available
Subject to the availability of funds, USAID intends to provide between US$48,000,000 to US$50,000,000 in total USAID funding to be allocated over a five year period. Applicants are encouraged to propose a cost share contribution under this program, but it is not required.
Geographic Coverage
The project will be implemented in the Northern Arid Lands of Kenya demarcated by the following provinces and/or districts:
Northern Arid Lands Zone – this zone covers the whole of North Eastern Province plus the following districts: Turkana and Samburu in Rift Valley; Marsabit and Isiolo in Eastern Province; and, Tana River in Coast
Activities
For the Northern Arid Lands zone, activities will include high impact, cost-effective interventions that take into consideration:
- Complimentary technical areas tailored and designed for the Northern Arid Lands zone;
- Support at the district and community level, while working through the provincial government structures;
- Linking service delivery support with systems strengthening activities;
- Ensure rapid deployment, smooth transition and continuity of essential care services to critical populations (e.g. ART Clients, OVCs etc) without disruption;
- Coordinating vertically, throughout Kenyan government structures, and horizontally with other US Government and Kenyan partners including drought response agencies;
- Working within the government health system in the delivery of health services; and,
- Building strong partnerships with effective Kenyan NGOs, FBOs, private sector, and partners’ essential for sustained service delivery.
Expected Project Results
For the Northern Arid Lands zone, USAID/Kenya expects that the project will achieve measurable results in the following service delivery areas based on regional epidemiological differences and national targets:
- HIV;
- TB;
- FP/RH;
- MNCH;
- Nutrition;
- Water Sanitation and Hygiene; and
- Household economic strengthening related to the specific target groups.
