ERSTE Foundation (DIE ERSTE österreichische Spar-Casse Privatstiftung) and Open Society Foundations in cooperation with the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network are inviting journalists for Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence 2014. The major purpose of the fellowship program is to encourage regional networking among journalists and advance balanced coverage of topics that are central to the region as well as to the European Union.
The theme of the fellowship program for 2014 is ‘Generations’. Journalists should think of a story that they want to report and link the story to the theme when preparing proposal. The significance must be broader in context of the region and the European Union. The phenomenons choose must be relevant, current and original.
Fellows will be offered €2,000 bursary, participation in the introductory seminar (four-day) to be held in Vienna in April 2014, grant of up to €2,000, on-going mentoring and support, two-day editing sessions in Belgrade or Skopje during September/October 2014, participation in final evaluation seminar and award ceremony in regional state during December 2014, worldwide publication of reports in all local languages and English during October/December 2014, part of promotional events to mark publication lunch during December 2014/January 2015, and membership of fellowship alumni network.
Eligibility Criteria –
- Applicants must be experienced journalists from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia.
- Applicants must be proficient in English.
- The proposed project must refer to the theme ‘generation’ and demonstrate an original approach to researching and reporting an important aspect of the topic.
- The proposed project must seek to enhance information and dialogue among the countries of south-eastern Europe (SEE), and between SEE and the EU.
- Proposals should refer primarily to the country where they normally reside, but include plans to conduct useful cross border research in other country in the SEE region and/or EU member state.
